While little in life is ever certain, one thing we can all be sure of is that as time goes on, we inevitably begin to age. And with that comes a plethora of personal struggles and the constant conflict that tussles in our minds between accepting and loving ourselves while also being unfairly critical of the way we start to look.
“I grew up hearing my nana call all the other women in my family beautiful but complain about her own looks constantly. Whether it was that her arms were too fat, her rosacea looked ugly, or she didn’t like the way her ankles looked, she was always so hard on herself. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen the effect that had on my mom. She’s hard on herself about her looks too. And as much as the women in my family have told me I’m beautiful, I’ve been hard on myself too. I still am.
‘I Wish You Knew’ is a song that gathers its inspiration from such dilemmas. The artist, newcomer Rue Vega, wrote the lyrics after an interaction with a customer while working in a clothes store, who was feeling insecure about trying on the clothes that she was drawn to.
“I told my manager I was going to take a quick bathroom break, snuck my phone in, and made a note with the first line of the chorus: ‘I wish you knew how beautiful you are.’ It was what I wished I could’ve said to that woman.”
It’s a lovely piece of music that will no doubt resonate with many of us who are having to overcome our insecurities. So if you’re feeling a little bit down and need a pick-up, then we strongly suggest giving this song a spin!
